caring for your skin leads to a younger, healthier-looking you

Author: Lois Joy Johnson

Your new dentures should give you more confidence in your appearance, especially your smile, but taking care of your oral health is just one part of looking and feeling younger. Along with maintaining a healthy diet and exercising, you must also take care of your skin.

Skin, if not properly cared for, can lead to blemishes, age spots, wrinkles, or worse. Improper care can leave you looking older than your real age! To help you care for your skin and maintain it well into your 80s, and even 90s, I’ve compiled some of my best expert tips and tricks:

  1. Wear a Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Sunscreen Daily All-Year Round. Look at your nude derriere because that’s how your face would look if you’d been covering up for the last 40 years! UVA rays age your skin and it’s not just when you’re outside directly under the sun’s rays. UVA rays penetrate glass, so if you work in a sunny office or drive daily don’t even think about skipping your daily morning dose of sunscreen.
  2. Glow is the New Tan. Stop your tan addiction because whether it’s real or salon baked, it‘s just about the most damaging thing you can do to your skin. Instead, for a natural-looking glow all year round, use a gradual self-tanner. Self-tanners also help blur freckles, brown spots, spider veins and discolorations on legs, chest and arms.
  3. Get a New Pair of Big Dark Sunglasses Every Year. Shapes change but Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn-style frames always look chic and are large enough to protect your eyes and eye-area from sun damage. They are also a great substitute for concealer and eye makeup when you run errands or walk the dog.
  4. Rethink your OTC Skincare to Address your Current Skin Issues. Menopause usually means thinner, drier skin, a loss of elasticity and a need to re-evaluate your skincare strategy. Look for products with proven de-agers like retinol, AHAs, and antioxidants that resurface skin texture, plump-up lines and minimize the appearance of pigmentation changes and discolorations.
  5. Get Serious about Skincare. Pay attention to moles, pre-cancerous lesions, brown spots, facial hair and visit your dermatologist for a head-to-toe skin cancer check. Also, ask your doctor about lasers to improve age spots, broken blood vessels, cellulite, leg veins, wrinkles, scars, facial hair and moles.
